Civility is not a term Güring is particularly inclined to. Cold,
calculating, and insistant on knowing the details of things, he is often
prone to fits of anger and has an inhumane thirst for the blood of his enemies.
He
is a master of obtaining information through torture, and is every bit as
arrogant and ego-driven as the man who inspired him: Ein Drache.
A great number of the Edeans who served in the Kriegbesonnenheit, the army
which Ein Drache commanded, were willing participants in the nationwide slaughter
that was instituted upon the land. The Krieg as it came to be known, was
the most ruthless terrorist force the world had ever known, and its ranks
swelled to the millions. Güring was one such willing party, and he rose
very quickly to the rank of field commander during his service to the Krieg.
When the army was almost completely obliterated by the forces of St. Laurent
in the closing years of the war however, Güring found himself on the
run from the enemy. He sought shelter in Latvannon and went into hiding,
and for a number of years was presumed dead by all who had ever known him.
Twenty-five years after the war ended however, Güring reappeared. He
had barely aged a day, but wore a mask covering his upper face, for reasons
that are hitherto unknown. He immediately set about collecting the former
Krieg under his command. Any former officers who had gone into hiding were
called out. Anyone in Latvannon known to have been a Krieg supporter during
the war was asked to join Güring's forces.
Unsurprisingly perhaps, the turnout was only modest, and Güring had
been expecting it as such. Fear would keep many away -- fear that they would
be scorned and hated by their neighbours. Fear that even if they came forward,
their efforts would be for naught once again. Drache had spoken of equality
for all men, control of one's destiny, disposing of authorities, religions,
and old traditions. To many, this had been a desireable ideal. Many viewed
these as the foundations of social corruption. Güring did as well.
But the dream had failed. Why pursue an ideal that had been crushed once
already? While in hiding, Güring had obtained a manuscript from the
Magicians Library at Rünith that spoke of 11 orbs with which a person
might shape their destiny. The details were scarce, but the premise was enough
to attract Güring's undivided attention. As he learned, Drache had been
quite preoccupied with this manuscript as well, and had obtained the orbs,
placing them in cornerstones. They had been his final resort, should he find
himself besieged, but he had been without means to use them in the last battle.
The stones were buried thus in the ruins of Par Mavarsia, his old fortress.
Learning this, Güring looked to the North and immediately set to uncovering
the stones. He would see his destiny through and command its success, at
any cost.
